It’s not often these days that, upon a first listen, I get giddy. In the last ten years, I can count on one hand (maybe a few extra fingers if i’m thinking real hard) the number of acts who’ve done that for me on first listen. Dermot Kennedy, Mosa Wild, Kota the Friend to name a few. But when “Fell In Love with The City” by Another Sky hit my desk, my jaw literally dropped.
Lead singer Catrin Vincent has one of the most hauntingly beautiful voices i’ve heard in a long, long time. Her power lends one to believe this is being belted by a man, but man, woman, child, thing - it doesn’t matter. Catrin is impressive, carrying vocal moments of Alt-J, Florence Welch, and something i’ve never heard before to make it uniquely her own. A name that, in time, will be one that stands on its own.
Enough about just Vincent, as I could continue to blubber on, but Vincent’s voice is really made only stronger by the backing of the full band. It’s like Foals or Alt-J had a lovechild with Radiohead, and said lovechild banged one out with some post-rock band a la This Will Destroy You while reimagining In Rainbows together. Elements of Civil Twilight twinkle in and out, presenting nothing short of a sonic journey on their debut album I Slept On the Floor. While this might not be the album that breaks them to the mainstream, this is the album that will introduce a lot of people to something special, which in and of itself is magical. Hop on, we’re driving the bandwagon for the remainder of 2020 on this one.
