When we first heard “Cool It Child” from Hazlett’s 2017 debut EP Honey, Where is My Home, we were smitten. Honest, raw, and emotional. We were caught by Triple J classifying his sound as Kings of Leon on valium, and over three years, that comparison still rings true on his new EP Thundering Hopes.
The songwriter, who has recanted in prior interviews of being in a band in Germany, going back home to Australia after their demise, dating a girl, taking “the most creative day job he could find” at an advertising agency, losing said girl and resorting back to his passion of music as the narrative of his career arc. It is a win for all of us, because his new EP continues on what we loved so much about his debut: breathtakingly raw, devoutly honest, and just damn good. Armed with the support of Swedish label/management BLNK, one can hope that Hazlett follows up this wonderful EP with his official debut album later this year into early next year. While the world is in a state of uncertainty, his sound is poised for continued momentum on Triple J, an NPR Tiny Desk, SXSW, and many additional major platforms to introduce this talent to the world. Pro tip: “Easy Now Tiger” is one of our staffs favorite songs of 2020 thus far!
