Rising like a phoenix from the delta blues scene, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram is blazing trails at the ripe age of 21. The young slinger already has recording credits and tour spots with Keb Mo, Eric Gales, Buddy Guy, and Tedeschi Trucks Band under his belt, and is living up to the only-first-name-needed legends that brought him here: Muddy. BB. Jimi. Oh, and he has been nominated for a Grammy.
The youngblood is riding a wave of blues-inspired guitarists, who’ve infused the blues-rock sound into more modernly adaptable pills for today’s generation, the Gary Clark’s and John Mayer’s of the world, while maintain a sense of what makes the blues rugged, old-school, and classic: the feels. With Kingfish’s most recent release, he takes a decade+ old song from Michael Burks, and according to his interview with NPR, “…and with this cover, I wanted to not only give a respectful nod to him, but also show that a song released twelve years ago can shine with a contemporary spin.” Check out his live version of “Empty Promises” below, and go to his spotify page to hear a killer studio version as well.
