The Heavy Heavy

Rock / Psychedelic Blues

Brighton, England, UK

We gush about a lot of rising artists here on NBT, but over the now three plus (!!!) years we’ve had NBT up and going, this might be one of the ones we are most excited about. Growing up on bands like Buffalo Springfield, James Taylor, Joni, The Beach Boys, Seals & Croft, and a lot of the music that Laurel Canyon produced in the 60s on top of the big acts like Zepp and The Who, the sound of the 60s is forever engrained in who we are, not only those of us here at NBT, but the world at large. I will argue anybody that this timeframe is the most important era of popular music.

Since the close of the 70s, things have morphed drastically, and we’ve seen a lot of different genres spawn off of the folk-rock, peace and love, flower power California rock. Inspiration breeds creativity, and even Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters and The Killers can trade back to earlier eras. The beauty is what goes around comes around. Things go out of fashion, but they will always return to some degree. And that brings us to the here and now and Brighton’s high voltage duo The Heavy Heavy.

The duo (recently expanded to a 5-piece for a more sonic live experience) are one of the closest things to that 60s Laurel sound i’ve heard in a long, long time. A blend of folk-rock, California sun soaked pop, and a psychedelic blues sound with a twist of acid-dripped guitars. You could literally pick up songs like “All My Dreams” and place it in 1970 and it would have been a hit. You can turn on the radio in your 1968 Chevy Camaro while driving down Hwy 1 and the scene is perfectly set.

The bands debut EP, Life and Only Life, is 6 songs (not including the single version of their song “Miles and Miles”) that clocks in around 23 minutes of pure bliss of decades past in an almost hypnotic fashion. Released June 1st, the band has signed with ATO (home to other great acts like Black Pumas, My Morning Jacket, Alabama Shakes, Allen Stone and more) and plan to release a debut full-length in ‘23. We suggest starting with “All My Dreams”, hit singles “Go Down River” and “Miles and Miles”, then explore some of the back-singles, like the gripping cover of The Action’s song “Brain”. If you aren’t hooked at that point, please give us a call so we can talk.

The Heavy Heavy will be hitting the road with acts like the Black Pumas and St. Paul & the Broken Bones both in their native England and here stateside. Catch them while you can before they are major festival bound and playing bigger and bigger clubs/rooms.
