The cosmic country vegabond known as Paul Cauthen has been sweeping the Texas scene over the last handful of years. 2016’s My Gospel saw the rise of a relatively unknown vintage troubadour bring his booming vocals to a DFW/east Texas scene that has produced other risers over the last few years like Charley Crockett and William Clark Green. However, it wasn’t until 2019’s Room 41, recorded over a two year span as the gritty songwriter lived in DFW’s hip-chic clubhouse Belmont Hotel.
“Cocaine Country Dancing” is the definition of cosmic country, something that fits somewhere between the indigo approach of fellow east Texan Kacey Musgraves and the outlaw/blues sounds of Sturgill Simpson. Cut through the haze of funked up smoke that “Cocaine Country Dancing” provides and get into some of the meat and bones of the album like “Holy Ghost Fire” and “Lay Me Down”, and you will see Cauthen sitting politely, most likely with a joint in hand, at the gates of breakthrough and success.
Here’s to hoping a full length no.3 happens in 2020/2021, because this lightning rod (funny enough.. the name of the label he is signed to currently) is ready to strike the big time.
