The art of bringing soul to the singer/songwriter stylings is nothing new, but the surge that we’ve seen of late with the alt-driven songwriters/bands like Kaleo, Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, Barns Courtney, and the likes is nothing short of a fad I can get behind. Cobi Mike, the songwriter from Minnesota, may best be known by outliers as the singer of now-defunct indiepop outfit Gentlemen Hall, who ran into some success in 2013 with their song “Sail into the Sun”, but it’s the bluesy mourns of his solo work that showcase Cobi as a truly special artist . If you like Hozier and the elements of gospel soul mixed with a wailing passion - give this guy a listen. He is good - like really good.
