Saba

Hip Hop

Chicago, Illinois

Saba has been our radar here at nbt.fm for some time. The rapper started to first make his name in 2013, gaining a solid feature on a rising Chicago acts mixtape. That rising act? Chance the Rapper. After a few additional collabs with Chance, Saba dropped his debut album in 2016 titled Bucket List Project. It was at that time that Saba really hit our radar upon praises and critical acclaim, gaining comparison to Kendrick for a similar flow style and, at times, sound.

It was ‘18s sophomore album, CARE FOR ME, that really got us fully buying the hype. The concept-driven album details the story of his late-cousin and continued the rave reviews. From A.V. Club to pitchfork or Vice, all sung the immaculate praises of CARE FOR ME. Both A.V. Club and Consequence of Sound ranked the album as their 3rd best album of the year, respectively. “Prom / King” is still one of the most profound and moving songs we’ve heard of the last 15 years.

Sadly, it took a bit over 3 years for the third album to drop and that brings us to the here and now. Few Good Things dropped just a week ago, falling somewhere between the jazzy hip hop sound of previous efforts and a neo soul influence, similar to D’Angelo or Maxwell, that hadn’t fully appeared in previous efforts. Nonetheless, it’s an album that needs to be heard. Saba is here to stay — and is one of the best artists in the hip hop game right now. Early reviews are already raving about the album, with NME giving it a perfect score and Consequence of Sound giving a top tier rating.

We are telling you now… make Saba a part of the rotation. He is here to stay and he is the next big thing in hip hop. He may not take over the airwaves, but if you are wanting consistency and an artist who has mastered his craft but unafraid to grow and bloom — it’s Saba.
