Topaz Jones

Hip Hop / Funk & Alt R&B

Montclair, New Jersey

No need to sugar coat this one with a long intro. Jersey native Topaz Jones dropped one of our favorite "indie” albums of the last few years in ‘21 with Don’t Go Tellin’ Your Momma, which in 2023 is still spawning singles and songs getting picked up on Alt Hip Hop playlists on Apple Music, Spotify, and the likes.

Born to a musician father and Harvard scholar mother, Topaz has been releasing music since 2013, but it wasn’t until his debut album in 2016 that heads started to turn. Pitchfork praised the young artist with the title of “viral”, and it was maybe some foresight on the pen of those rowdy folks over at the fork to see it. The aforementioned Don’t Go Tellin’ was accompanied by a visual album short film, the film which went on to win awards at SXSW and Sundance.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Topaz walks into 2023 and beyond with label support and/or stronger fanfare, with its infectious mix of funk, alt hip hop, and even elements of old school R&B. Topaz has a bit of something for everyone that is looking for some hip hop that isn’t what you’d hear on the radio today.
